Music
Music was an integral part of Jane Austen’s life, and therefore, her characters’ lives. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, the upper class specifically was fascinated with music. At the time, popular music was conflated with classical music; with Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven writing some of the “top hits” of their time. Music was a pillar of society - bringing people together. From operas to balls, to an evening at home – music served as the lifeblood of the late Georgian era (when Sense and Sensibility takes place).
When she was young, Austen kept a book of her favorite songs, kind of like a playlist! Listen to some of her favorites below!
